Freelancers are people that work for a specific skill or create a product as a service. Becoming a freelancer is our favorite version of an online job without investment.
The digital nomad title doesn’t really clarify much for us these days. We’ve laid out three steps to become a digital nomad. Follow the plan and you can become one too.
But, how do digital nomads make money? The word ‘digital’ doesn’t explain it. Are you making an income from Instagram? Social media? Freelancing is a component of any digital nomad making money.
But what about freelancer nomads?
Freelancer nomads are much more specific group of people. These nomads travel the world and work as consultants that don’t require on-site client assistance.
What are freelancers? A freelancer is someone that is self-employed and is not necessarily committed to a particular employer for the long-term. Typically freelancer workers are employed through a temporary agency that staffs them labor to clients.
What are nomads? A nomad is a person that does not have a central habitat. They travel from place to place with no specific home. Nomads used to be hunter-gatherers that would often live by offering services (hey! freelance) to the local resident population.
I’m afraid today’s terminology is vastly different. Today’s terminology is mainly figurative…
I believe freelancing has moved away from a temporary agency and people now use platforms to establish a client base or generate leads for new clients. In fact, successful freelancers are glorified consultants. And nomads, they are mainly people that love to travel and explore the world.
So, freelancers + nomads = freelancer nomads!

Freelancer nomads are a specific subset of digital nomads. They are people who live in different locations, moving from one place to another while solely living off of freelance income as a day job.
The best part of freelancing is that you typically can do this anywhere and it doesn’t require upfront investment. Generating income is key to becoming financially free. I believe this is a core strategy to achieving financial freedom.

Becoming a freelancer is easy. In fact, it’s never been easier. With digitalization, you can hire anyone in the world at anytime. I see many companies around the world hiring more people from around the world daily. This will only help the freelance industry further.
Building a Freelancer Nomad Business
How do you build a freelancer nomad business? It can be as simple as developing an action plan for creating your freelance business.
Examples of freelancing jobs and opportunities include:
- Graphic design
- Web design
- Accounting
- Financial analysis
- Consulting (strategic, management, managerial)
- Virtual assistants
- So much more. Anything that is conducted at the workplace can be turned into a service.
Did you know that the freelancing industry is projected to boom over the next 10 years? Much of it is due to artificial intelligence and automation. There’s been plenty of studies, including research conducted that by 2020 the U.S. workforce will be 43% freelance. I have found a number of interest data points on the future of freelancing:
- As work changes, 54 percent of the U.S. workforce said they’re not very confident that work they do will exist in 20 years. Reskilling is therefore critical. 55 percent of freelancers participated in skill-related education in the last six months versus only 30 percent of non-freelancers.
- At its current growth rate, a majority of the U.S. workforce will be freelancers by 2027.
- Asked whether they started freelancing more by choice or necessity, 63 percent of freelancers said by choice — up 10 points (from 53 percent) since 2014.

How to start freelancing with no experience
Starting freelancing is an easy task. Building a client base is a different story. This takes time, so in order to become a freelancer nomad ensure you have a client base before going full blown nomadic on us. You’re going to need that income stability.
Just take a step back and think about what you are good at. What skills did you learn from prior job experiences? How can you market yourself to clients?
Here’s how to start freelancing with no experience:
- Write out 3-5 different skills and services that you’d like to provide or currently possess.
- Use one of the many freelance sites to complete a FULL PROFILE. Do whatever it takes to show your clients they can trust in you.
- Start generating leads for new work. Standardize your process so it is streamlined and you can do it with ease. At the same time, you will need to add a personalized approach catering to each client.
- Be responsive and answer your client calls immediately. If you don’t set up a call, they will go with someone else before you know it.
- Always deliver a quality work product for your clients. This leads to referrals!
- Ask for feedback from your clients, so you can continually improve.
- Enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Fiverr: You earn clients by setting up ‘gigs’ or projects to sell to clients

The nomadic lifestyle is an interesting one. The sharing economy is alive and well. We are no longer afraid to share workspaces, living quarters, rides, etc. With a nomadic lifestyle, you enable yourself to build so many relationships around the globe. A nomadic lifestyle does have some limits. You never have a true home.
The future of the nomad lifestyle is growing. I love this Level.io analysis on the future of the digital nomad lifestyle. Pieter Levels calls for this:
“There will be 1 billion digital nomads by 2035”
A number of the factors include the easier ability to travel (people will be able to fly to China in 2 hours), the growing freelancer population, faster internet speeds, lesser reliance on marital relationships, decline of homeowneship rates, and so much more.
It is a fascinating read and I suggest everyone reads it. His call for 1 billion ‘freelancer nomads’ by 2035 if not unrealistic. He’s using conservative metrics found from the future of freelancing forecasts too.
